(28) Now Medical and Car Concerns

So many times we thought this must be the end of the trials. Surely we have endured enough and proven we will follow through. Apparently the Lord knew different and gave us more opportunities to grow in our commitment and faith.
A couple weeks before we were to leave for Ghana, Ben received some unexpected and unsettling news. He had some blood work run and it came back with a concern. Our path had some new unexpected lows and highs, twists and turns. Orders for more blood work, a bone marrow draw, and a PET scan all needed to be added to the "to do" list before we left. The day of the PET scan we found out it would not be possible. The machine that produces the radioactive drug, tracer, was down as well as all the other places that produce it in the surrounding states. There were many other people that had already been waiting a few days for it; even if we were pushed through toward the front it could be weeks before Ben would get in, if the machine was up and running in a couple days. This wasn't going to work, we didn't have that much time before we were to leave. At this point an alternate option was presented -dozens of x-rays. Ben jokes that if he didn't have cancer already either of these options were sure to give him cancer. Over the last 2 weeks of work he spent more time at doctors appointments and having tests run than he did at work. Fortunately, his employer was very accommodating. Just days before we were to leave we met with the oncologist to find out if we were cleared to leave as planned. We were relieved to find out it was in the early stages of Monoclonal Gammopathy. He would need to retest in 6 months. I asked the doctor, just before we left his office, "What if we decide to extend our stay in Ghana? Is it possible to run blood work there and get the results sent back here?" I have no idea how cooperative or likely international doctors and medicine work together. The doctor's reply was another witness that Heavenly Father is in and aware of every detail. He said, "I don't know where you'll be in Ghana, but a friend of mine that is a doctor from Apline, Utah, has been over there for a couple of years. He had some blood work he needed read and I was able to get and do that for him. I asked were his friend was at in Ghana and he said, "Kumasi". That is where our home will be!
Then one afternoon when Ben was leaving work a lady backed into him. We don't buy new cars but this is the nicest, newest car we have owned together, yet it was okay. We weren't upset. Ben called around a few places and we found out how much it would be to fix it then took the money and left the scratch on the bumper.
In all of this we were grateful that we were blessed and that things weren't worse. We saw the Lord's hand in our lives in providing for us and protecting us. We were thankful that none of them were keeping us from Ghana.
